When bidding online, you may choose to bid above the ‘Next bid must be at least’ amount. This is called a maximum bid and is not visible to other users on the site. This ensures that you stay ahead by the lowest amount possible, as the system automatically outbids existing and new bidders by the lowest possible increment, up to your maximum bid. If there is a higher bid than yours, that bid will outbid you. When you place a maximum bid, you can instantly see the amount of your visible bid, or whether you have been outbid by an existing maximum bid. Please note that it is always the lot’s lowest possible bid that wins, rather than your or anyone else’s maximum bid – even though that may be higher.
